Bio

Dr. Chitwood grew up on a cattle farm in Wythe County, Virginia, where both of his parents were physicians. He attended Woodberry Forest School in Orange County and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Kenyon College.

Before entering the medical field, Dr. Chitwood spent a year living and working in New Zealand and later managed his family’s cattle farm. He then served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot, flying search and rescue helicopters and working as a flight instructor.

Following his military service, he attended medical school at the University of Virginia and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine in North Carolina. He spent 20 years practicing in the Emergency Department at Martha Jefferson Hospital and now serves part-time at Bath Community Hospital.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Chitwood enjoys flying his small plane—often commuting to work by air—and riding motorcycles. He recently completed a coast-to-coast motorcycle trip with his son.
